Under The Radar of the Day: Remember a couple years back when a school in Massachusetts discovered 17 students were pregnant at the same time and everyone went nuts? Well Memphis, Tenn.’s Action News 5 has learned that over 90 girls at Frayser High School — roughly 20% of the female student body — are either pregnant or have given birth this school year.
Memphis City School Board member Stephanie Gatewood pushed back against the report, saying the girls “absolutely did not get pregnant in the hallways of our schools,” adding that it was a community issue that was “spill[ing] over into our schools.” She noted that there were pregnancy prevention programs in place right now to help students, but sources told Action News 5 that a supplemental initiative was in the works.
"It’s a shame that all these girls at Frayser are pregnant, but it ain’t nothing new," 16-year-old Frayser High School student Terrika Sutton is quoted as saying. "Some girls just try to do it because they think it’s cute. For some, it’s an accident."
